Today's winner is Arizona over Philadelphia. This is my NL Game of the Month.
Philadelphia is dwelling in the NL East cellar, 15 1/2 GB, with and overall record of 47-58, and possessing one the Majors worst home mark of 21-29 when playing host. Sure, on paper their pitching staff reminds us of Atlanta's Maddux, Smoltz, Avery, and Glavine… But it doesn't matter if surgeons like Koufax, Feller, Gibson, and Guidry (yeah, I said it!) can shut you down. Eventually you have to cross the plate at least once a game. The Phillie's seem to have thrown up the white flag, as they traded away some of their best offensive producers at the deadline. Rollins, Howard, and Ruiz are all that remains. 1B, Howard has just 1 hit in his L15 ABs, whiffing 10 times in that span. The team has dropped 4 of their L6, posting a total of 15 runs in those outings, with only one quality performance. Today, Joe Blanton takes the bump. The RH is 8-9 with a 4.59 mark on the season. Blanton's career record against 'Zona is 1-2 with a whopping ERA of 9.00. The Diamondback's have won 10 of their L13, to bring the squad within two games of the Giants for the NL West's top spot. Since July 20th, the club is averaging just about 6 1/2 RPG. Their lineup boasts seven sluggers either flirting with or over the century mark in hits. Ian Kennedy gets the nod here. The RH is red-hot, winning his L3 starts, allowing a mere total of 6 ER's, striking out 23, with just 1 walk in 22 1/3 IP. The Phillie's are 9-23 their L32 games following a loss, 1-5 their L6 games played as a home 'dog, and 1-5 in Blanton's L6 starts as a 'dog at home. The Diamondback's are 7-2 their L9 games played following a win, 7-3 their L10 games played as a favorite, and 20-7 in Kennedy's L27 starts as a favorite. Take Arizona. Thank you.
