Wednesday's Free MLB Pick: Philadelphia Phillies -113

It's been a difficult season for Philadelphia stater Cole Hamels, as he enters tonight's game at 2-11 with a 4.50 ERA over 16 starts. Hamels has shown signs of turning things around. In two of his last three starts he's allowed 3 earned runs or fewer. Both of which came on the road. In fact, Hamels has a much stronger 3.54 ERA over 8 road starts.

If there's any team to get his season turned around, it's the San Diego Padres. Hamels is a dominant 8-2 with a 2.15 ERA in 13 career starts vs the Padres. He's limited the Padre batters to a .186 average. Outfielder Cameron Maybin is the only player on San Diego hitting better than .286 against (more than 4 at-bats) Hamels and he's on the DL.

Adding extra value here is the fact that the Phillies offense should be able to give Hamels some decent run-support. San Diego will be sending out Robbie Erlin, making just his second career start. You also have to like the fact that Domonic Brown ended his 14-game homerless streak last night and we have seen what he can do when he gets hot. Given the circumstances and the price, this is a really strong value play. BET THE PHILLIES!
