I came into the season believing Adam Wainwright was going to be one of the finalist for the Cy Young Award and so far he hasn't disappointed. Wainwright is 2-1 with a 2.05 ERA and 1.000 WHIP over three starts. He's coming off a complete game shutout against the Brewers, where he allowed just four hits and struck out 12. Wainwright's most impressive stat this season is that he has not walked a single batter. That's the sign of a pitcher who is in complete control on the mound.
The same can't be said for Philadelphia's Cole Hamels, who is 0-2 with a 7.56 ERA and 1.620 WHIP over his first three starts. Hamels did pitch well in his last outing, but it came against the pathetic Marlins, who can make any pitcher look good.
The Cardinals offense packs a much bigger punch, despite getting shut out last night. St Louis had scored 8 or more in three of their last five. The Phillies haven't scored more than 3 runs in six straight games and only twice all season have they topped 5 runs. With Wainwright not figuring to need a whole lot of run support, this game could get ugly quick if Hamels is not on his game. BET THE CARDINALS!
