The Hoosiers come into this game off an embarrassing 14-62 loss at home to Wisconsin, but that actually may be a good thing for those looking to back Indiana this weekend. You have to believe the Hoosiers are extremely undervalued after such a horrible loss, and when you look at this team’s overall performance this year you certainly get that feeling. While the Hoosiers are just 4-6 overall, their 48-point loss was easily their worst defeat of the season. Prior to that the Hoosiers hadn’t lost a game by more than 15-points and four of their losses came by 4-points or fewer. That includes a 27-31 loss to Michigan State and 49-52 loss to Ohio State. Two teams who aren’t all that much better or worse than the Nittany Lions.
While Penn State has three conference wins over Illinois (35-7), Iowa (38-14) and Purdue (34-9) by more than the number listed here, all three of those teams are extremely bad offensively. Indiana is more than capable of holding their own on the offensive side of the ball, which is a big reason why you have to like their chances of covering the spread. The Hoosiers come in averaging 31.2 ppg and are putting up over 431 yards of offense a game. If they can simply reach their season average of 31 points, that would mean Penn State would have to score 48 points. The Nittany Lions haven’t scored more than 39 points in a single game this season.
Indiana has been an excellent team to jump on following a game in which they failed to win. They are a perfect 4-0 ATS over their last four games in that situation. They are also 5-1 ATS over their last 6 games following a S.U. loss by more than 20 points. You also have to factor in that Penn State likely won’t take this game all that seriously. The Nittany Lions are just 2-5 ATS over their last 7 home games vs a team with a losing road record. BET THE HOOSIERS!
