Game Overview

There are very few people that would argue against the fact that Alabama has been and remains the Gold Standard in college football over the past five years. It has won three national titles in the past four seasons and over the last two seasons it has lost just twice. One of those losses came last season at the hands of Texas A&M in a 29-24 stunner at home as a 13.5-point favorite. The other was a 9-6 loss to LSU in 2011 that was avenged with a 21-0 shutout of the Tigers in the BCS title game that same season.

This game has been circled on the Tides’ calendar for almost a year so you have to believe that Nick Saban will have his team ready, especially since it is coming off a bye. This year’s defense may not have gelled yet into a unit that allowed an average of just over 10 points a game last season, but it will be prepared to handle whatever the Aggies throw at it. Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron also knows that this is a chance to shine in one of the biggest games of the year, when all eyes with be focused on the other team’s signal caller.

That signal caller is none other than Johnny “Football” Manziel, whose legend began to explode after leading his team to that improbable victory in last year’s matchup. That effort also had a lot to do with him winning the Heisman Trophy as a freshman, but that was then and this is now. Manziel has already run up some lofty numbers in a couple of tune-up games, but he will be under the gun to catch the Tides’ defense sleeping two years in-a-row.

The other concern for Texas A&M coming into this matchup is a defense that has already allowed a total of 61 points to Rice and Sam Houston State. Granted, neither of these games were ever close, but that is still quite a few points when you consider that it only gave-up 30 or more points once last season.

Revenge in college football is a huge factor in handicapping games, especially when you are dealing with the best team in the nation. Texas A&M is still a very good football team in its own right and it will be playing in front of its home-town crowd, but in the end the Aggies will not be able to keep this game closer than the spread making the free pick in the game Alabama minus the 7.5 points.
