NFL Betting Trends - Week 2 Matchups
The new NFL regular season just got underway last week and the Oddsmakers are already right at the top of their game with eight underdogs and seven favorites covering against the spread while one game ended as a PUSH. To get you ready for each and every week of the season, NFL Betting Trends will dig a bit deeper into the numbers for a few of the bigger matchups on the schedule. All betting lines and odds quoted have been provided by 5Dimes.
Sunday’s early games feature a matchup between two playoff teams from last season trying to avoid a dreaded 0-2 start. It was a matter of too little, too late for Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins this past Monday night as they could not overcome a dreadful start in a 33-27 loss to Philadelphia as four-point home favorites. It will not get any easier this week when they have to travel to Lambeau Field to face the 0-1 Green Bay Packers, who came up short in a 34-28 loss to San Francisco as five-point road underdogs in their season opener. The Packers have been opened as nine-point favorites with the total set at 49.5. They are 4-1 straight-up against the Redskins in the last five meetings and 5-1-1 ATS against them in the last seven games. The total has stayed UNDER in the last five meetings in Green Bay.
A couple of other interesting early games have 0-1 Atlanta as a 7.5-point home favorite against 1-0 St. Louis and 1-0 Dallas on the road as a 2.5-point underdog against Andy Reid’s 1-0 Kansas City Chiefs.
The big matchup in the second round of games on Sunday pits the Denver Broncos on the road as 4.5-point favorites against the New York Giants in another one of those rare Manning vs. Manning showdowns. The Broncos destroyed Baltimore last Thursday 49-27 as 7.5-point home favorites behind Peyton Manning’s record-tying seven touchdown passes. Eli Manning and the Giants looked rusty and sloppy in a 36-31 loss to Dallas this past Sunday night as 3.5-point underdogs on the road. The total for this game has been set at 55.
The early edge to the NFC West title will be up for grabs on Sunday night when San Francisco heads up the coast to face the Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers looked pretty sharp in their opening-day victory over Green Bay, but the Seahawks had an unexpected battle on their hands to get by Carolina 12-7 as three-point favorites on the road in their season debut. Seattle has been opened as a three-point home favorite for this showdown. Despite the fact that it is 1-4 SU in the last five meetings overall it has dominated this series in its own backyard. The Seahawks are 5-1 ATS against San Francisco in the last six games played in Seattle and 7-3 SU in the last 10 games played there. The total for this game has been set at 44.5 and it has gone OVER in three of the last five meetings.
Week 2 in the NFL closes things out on Monday night with an AFC North battle between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. Both of these preseason playoff contenders are coming off an opening day loss so that means only one can avoid a 0-2 start. The Bengals have been opened as seven-point favorites at home with the total set at 41, but keep in mind that the Steelers are 11-1 SU in their last 12 trips to Cincinnati and 5-1 SU in the last six meetings overall.
