South Carolina opened up the season with a convincing win over North Carolina, while Georgia lost a close game at Clemson. The Bulldogs won’t have any time to lick their wounds, as they go home to face another very highly ranked team. South Carolina drilled Georgia last year, but this time the game will be played in Athens. This SEC showdown should be a great game all the way around.

Game Overview:

South Carolina got to open up the college football season by playing the first game of the year, and the Gamecocks didn’t disappoint. Some people were a little disappointed by Jadeveon Clowney’s performance in the first game, but he’ll be just fine. The South Carolina defense allowed only ten points against a North Carolina offense that is going to score a ton of points this year. The Gamecocks have a great combination of a terrific defensive line as well as a very talented secondary. It will be very interesting to see this defensive line go up against an elite offensive line like the Georgia Bulldogs have.

The Gamecocks offense is led by a dual-quarterback system. Connor Shaw and Dylan Thompson are both going to get playing time this year. The guess here is that Shaw will usually get the most time, but this is Steve Spurrier and it can be impossible to know how he feels about his quarterbacks. Sophomore running back Mike Davis ran for 115 yards on just 12 carries last week. If he keeps running the ball that well, this offense is going to be much more dangerous than most expected.

The Georgia Bulldogs lost at Clemson by three points last week. It was the biggest game of the week, and the Bulldogs came up just short. Georgia botched a short field goal attempt, and that ended up being the final margin in the game. To be fair, winning a game at night in Death Valley is no easy task, and the Bulldogs did play pretty well for the majority of the game. Most concerning for Georgia fans was the fact that star receiver Malcolm Mitchell was lost for the season due to a torn ACL in the Clemson contest.

Aaron Murray was 20 for 29 for 323 yards in last week’s game, but he threw zero touchdowns and had one interception. Todd Gurley had 154 yards on just 12 carries and the Georgia running game basically moved the ball at will. Can they do that against a superior defensive front like South Carolina? That really will be the huge key to this game. Defensively, Georgia allowed 467 yards last week. The Bulldogs defense is talented, but they have very little experience.

Free Pick: Over 56

This should be a terrific game between two extremely talented SEC teams. Georgia needs this game badly after starting with a loss, and they will really want payback after last year’s embarrassing loss at South Carolina. Still, because the Gamecocks are so good, I like the over better than any side in this game. Both offenses should be able to move the ball all game long.
