Washington Nationals vs Philadelphia Phillies Pick 7/8/13

The Washington Nationals bring their game to Philadelphia to take on the struggling Phillies. The Nats have been hot of late winning, 7 out of their last 11 games in the 14th week of the season to bring their record just above .500 at 41-40. After winning 4 out of 5 during a tough home stand against the Milwaukee Brewers, they raised that record to 45-42. Now, star Bryce Harper returns to add offense and defense to their game. Can the Phillies match their games?

The Phillies, while ranking higher in all categories including slugging percentage, on base, runs and batting average (they are currently 13th as of this writing), are still below .500. This home stand against the Nationals will tell us how much grit the team really has.

The Nationals will start pitcher Ross Detwiler who is looking to improve on his abysmal 2-7 record this season. The left-hander endured a 4-1 loss against Milwaukee on 7/3, and now has a 4.04 ERA with a 1.49 WHIP. The Phillies will start John Lannan, a left-hander who has struggled with a 1-3 record and a 5.15 ERA with a 1.53 WHIP.

The Phillies are trying to get themselves above .500 as they cling to the 3rd-place position in the National League East behind first-place Atlanta and the second-place Nationals. With a sweep of the Nats in this three-game home stand, they can shorten the distance between third and second to a half game. The Phillies will be looking for nothing less than a 3-0 finish for this series.

Meanwhile, the Nationals are looking to extend their lead over their divisional foes with a sweep of their own bringing their total record for the year to 48-42, comfortably above five hundred and just two games behind sizzling hot-lanta. The Nats are currently 5 games back from the divisional leaders, and the Phillies trail 8 games. The question is, who will take advantage of an opportunity to start a run in the division?
