Arizona Diamondbacks at NY Mets MLB Pick July 3

Randall Delgado starts for the D-Backs, whose starting rotation remains depleted. Delgado is 23 and has been up-and-down between the majors and minors. He makes his fourth start of 2013 bringing a 4.05 ERA and .325 BAA, albeit with some decent peripherals (4:1 K/B ratio). With J.J. Putz weakened and Heath Bell having to close, Kirk Gibson will be hoping for innings out of Delgado. He also better be praying that the bats can get going against the Mets’ Matt Harvey. They can count on Paul Goldschmidt, and lately Gerardo Parra, but sluggers Jason Kubel, Martin Prado and others have struggled. They’ll need speed and contact guys Didi Gregorius and A.J. Pollock to get on base and make things happen tonight, or else Harvey will hang a lot of zeroes on the scoreboard.

The Mets will need to support their rising ace with offense and relief, but that’s been an issue for them. For his 2.00 ERA, 0.85 WHIP season, Harvey has a 7-1 record, but the Mets are only 10-7 in his starts. Last Friday, for instance, he threw 7 innings of one-run ball against the Nationals, but the Mets’ bullpen allowed five runs to lose the game. Their 4.32 reliever ERA is 25th in the majors. The Mets’ .674 OPS is 28th in the majors, by the way. We always love the Mets when Harvey starts, but it’s hard to count on this offense. After David Wright, there’s really not much to count on. When Daniel Murphy and Marlon Byrd are key pieces of your lineup, there’s just no guarantee for run support.

Harvey starting at home makes the Mets a pick tonight!
