MLB Pick: Chicago Cubs at Oakland A's Preview July 3
Toeing the rubber for the A's is right hander Bartolo Colon, one of the best stories in baseball this season. The former Cy Young winner owns an 11-2 record and a 2.79 ERA, outpitching his award-winning 2005 season. The remarkable comeback has reached new heights as Colon has won each of his last eight starts, posting a 1.37 ERA while racking up 34 strikeouts. There is no hotter pitcher in the league and Colon has yet to lose a home start this season.
Colon will be opposed by Cubs right hander Matt Garza. With the trade deadline approaching, this could be one of Garza's last start in a Cubs uniform as his recent outings have made him a target for trade talks. He is 2-0 with a miniscule 0.82 ERA over his last three starts, including a 10 strikeout performance in his last outing. Garza has had success in his career against the A's, posting a 3.09 ERA in five outings.
Garza should continue his string of strong performances, but the Cubs offense will struggle to muster up any offense against the streaking Colon. Look for the Athletics to take this matchup in a close contest, squeaking out the win by a run or two. Having already won four of their last five games, the A's will carry their momentum into the All Star break.
