MLB Pick: San Francisco Giants at Cincinnati Reds July 2
Much like their respective clubs, Tuesday's performance features two underachieving starting pitchers. Toeing the rubber for the Giants is former Cy Young Award winner, Tim Lincecum. The right hander has been ineffective this season, posting a 4-8 record with a 4.84 ERA. He is winless in his last four starts, which includes a subpar outing against the Dodgers in his last start. The news doesn't get any better for Giants fans as Lincecum is winless in three career starts against the Reds, owning a 7.41 ERA against his opponent.
Facing Lincecum is Reds' right hander Homer Bailey. The former first round pick finally delivered on expectations with a stellar 2012 season, but has failed to produce similar results in 2013. Following a tough May, Bailey rallied to string together five straight June outings of six innings-or-more. While he has fallen victim to the big inning, Bailey managed three quality starts in the month and should carry that success into July. The Giants' lineup may pose a threat for Bailey, who has posted a 5.59 ERA against the Giants in five career starts.
The tipping point in this matchup is Bailey's less than stellar mark at the Great American Ballpark. His career ERA at his home ballpark is more than a run higher than his road mark. Lincecum will receive enough run support to keep the Reds offense off balance.
