Chicago White Sox at Kansas City Royals Preview 6/23
Having lost seven of their last nine games, the White Sox find themselves in last place, 9.5 games behind the Tigers and at risk of falling out of contention before the All-Star break. Sox fans can't feel confident heading into Sunday's matchup with right hander Dylan Axelrod taking the hill. Axelrod is winless in his last four starts and has given up 10 runs in his last 10 innings pitched. However, while the right hander has struggled this season, his best start came against these Royals. On May 4th, Axelrod was the tough luck loser, throwing 7.2 innings while allowing just two runs.
Axelrod's opponent knows a thing or two about tough luck, compiling one of the best ERA's in the American League and having a 2-6 record to show for it. Right hander James Shields has been stellar in 15 starts this season, tossing quality starts in 15 of those outings. He has not won a game since April 30th, but his luck should change in Sunday's matchup. Look for Shields to pitch deep into this game as the right hander has pitched at least six innings in all 15 starts this season.
The White Sox may climb out of the hole they've dug for themselves, but their ascent will have to wait until after they leave Kansas City.
